Changing Freezing and Boiling Points


Do you know what is inside the strange building shown in this photograph? The building is used to store salt that is spread on the road when weather conditions are below the freezing point of water. What effect will the salt have on icy roads? Why store the salt in a building?


This truck removes snow and spreads salt. How does spreading salt on roads reduce accidents?


A solution of antifreeze is used to fill car radiators. It lowers the freezing point of the water in the radiator of the car. It also raises its boiling point and reduces corrosion. Why are the properties of this solution useful to motorists? Why isn’t salt used instead?

  1. 1) The salt will make the freezing point of the ice lower so the ice will melt quicker. The salt should be stored in buildings because the it will be less likely for the salt to melt.

    2)Spreading salt on roads reduces accidents by melting the ice so that they are not as slippery.

    3)A liquid is put into cars so the salt will melt into the radiator.

  2. 1. The salt increases the melting point and lowers the freezing point so the ice will melt and stay liquid.
    2. It is stored in a building so it doesn't get washed away or damaged by the weather.
    3. The less ice on the roads the less cars will slip.
    4. So that nothing freezes or boils in their motors.
    5. They don't use salt because they probably need to increase the boiling point and decrease the freezing point more than salt can.

    2. The salt is stored in a building to keep it from getting exposed to water.

    3.Spreading salt on the roads absorbs the water and makes the roads less slippery.

    4. Antifreeze is useful to motorists because it increases the life of the car by making the radiator impervious to freezing, corrosion, or boiling over.

    3. Salt is not used in this instance because salt is a solid, which is much harder to cycle through a radiator.

  4. 1. Salt lowers the melting point of ice which will make ice melt faster and not cause cars to slip.
    2. Spreading of salt will reduce accidents because the salt will melt the ice, that causes roads to be less slippery.
    3. Sometimes anti-freezes are used instead of salt because anti-freeze lowers the melting point but causes less damage to the car than salt.
