The pilot controls the hot air balloon with the amount of hot air, or heat that enters the bottom of the hot air balloon. This happens by the amount of fire started at the bottom of the balloon. The hotter the balloon gets, and the more heat that enters, the higher the hot air balloon rises. The less amount of fire, or heat, the lower the balloon will go. This happens by the hot air that is expanding the balloon causing it to rise due to the more air that is entering. The less hot air in the balloon the more it contracts and the lower the balloon will float.
They control the altitude by turning the burner on and off. it it is off, the molocules will start to cool, getting closer together letting the baloon drop. the oppisite will happen if you turn the burner on
